Angela R. Mathew

High School Seminar Program

What is the Angela R. Mathew High School Seminar Program?

The Angela R. Mathew High School Seminar Program is an opportunity for high school students to learn from some of the best collegiate mock trial competitors in the nation. We offer a dynamic program consisting of interactive lectures from our most experienced attorneys and witnesses, individual sessions in which students receive one-on-one guidance on how to improve their skills, demonstration rounds, and scrimmages.

The Harvard Undergraduate Mock Trial Association is one of the most competitive college mock trial programs in the country. We have competed and placed at the American Mock Trial National Championship Tournament numerous times, and we remain one of the most competitive teams in the country. Competing at the Nationals level for the past several years, Harvard placed 2nd in 2023, 1st in 2022, 6th in 2021, 4th in 2016, and 1st in 2015. The Seminar program is the forum for us to share with young competitors the tools and techniques that have led us to our success.

Since we started, the Angela R. Mathew High School Seminar Program has trained both novice and advanced teams, many of whom have gone on to win competitions at the state and national levels.

It is our philosophy that success in mock trial comes from a balance of knowing both how to prepare and how to deviate from the plan by thinking on your feet and being creative. In our two-pronged program, students spend part of their time in a series of interactive lectures, taught by HMTA's most experienced, accomplished team members, who can claim among them individual awards at all levels of collegiate competition. Students also take part in what we call “breakout sessions,” in which teams work individually with a member of Harvard Mock Trial to develop their cases, write questions and statements, and prepare for the scrimmage at the end of the seminar. We give you not only the tools to succeed, but also the personal guidance to implement these tools for yourself.

Yet, the seminar is more than just an educational program. Students meet competitors from all over the country, whether it is during lectures or at the annual ice cream social. And since you are at Harvard, we also offer tours of the world-famous, ivy-covered campus.

The dates for the 2026 Angela R. Mathew Seminar Program can be found on the registration page.
